SOMME AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL
The American military cemetery in Bony, France is officially named
Somme American Cemetery. The graves of soldiers who fought in the Somme
and the Aisne on the Hindenburg line are located here.On September 29 1918 the 27th and 30th U.S Division had 5 objectives : the village of Bellicourt, the entrance to the tunnel of the St Quentin canal, Quennemont and Gillemont farms and the hill where the present day Cemetery is located. They were flanked by the 3rd and 4th Australian Divisions.
The German fortification on the Hindenburg line were probably among the densest on the western front. Although the American and Australian Divisions captured their objectives and the Hindenburg line broke, they paid a heavy price in casualties.
