The 1st Australian Division attacked this village on July 23 1916. For 3 days, the Australians suffered near constant shell bombing in a trench barely deep enough to protect them. On the eve of July 26 they had courageously pushed the Germans out of the village. In a total of 5 days, the casualties added up to 5,285 men.
On July 27 they were relieved by the 2nd Australian Division who then was ordered to attack the German lines around Poziéres.
The attack was a failure in all but the right wing. Casualties totaled 3,500 men.
The last few German lines were captured on August 4 1916. The 2nd Australian Division suffered a devastating total of 6,848 casualties.
