Bonjour Olivier. Just a short note to say thank you for a very memorable ANZAC Day tour. Firstly, my wife and I really appreciate you going out of your way to collect us from our B&B in the early hours to take us to the dawn service. Throughout the day as we toured the Somme battlefields your knowledge and explanation of the battles as they unfolded was amazing. Finally, I cannot thank you enough for your willingness to take myself and other members of the group to cemetaries, that were not on your scheduled route, in order to visit the graves of our relatives. Thoughout the whole day it was obvious that you have a passion for sharing what happened almost 100 years ago. Again, many thanks.

Hi Olivier, thank you for a wonderful day.  Your service was punctual, friendly and knowledgeable, and I appreciated your tailoring it to my personal interests, and the passion you showed for what happened on the Somme. I would travel 10 00 miles to do it again.

Chris, Australia, Somme tour, May 2012

Dear Olivier, We want to thank you for your excellent tour. We realised that visiting the sites on our own would not have given us a real understanding of the Battle of the Somme. Your explanations of how the troops moved across the countryside and how the sites linked together made it so much more interesting and real. Your knowledge of the conditions for the soldiers and the small details of their lives made it so much more real for us.We left feeling that we understood far more than we expected – and moved and sad about the huge waste of young life. Many thanks for your knowledge and good company.

Jane and Mike, England, Somme tour

Thank you Olivier, for a fascinating, enlightening and impactful tour of the battlefields of World War I on a cold and wintery December day. We felt privileged to be in this area which is sacred to so many nations and to be shown the landmarks under your expert guidance, with so many stories of sacrifice and loss, made it a day we will not forget. We learnt so much from you about our own countrymen, as well as about those they fought with and against, and we were amazed by the trenches, the mud, the monuments and the atmosphere.

Your intricate knowledge of the area, and of the specifics of the battles fought there brought these battles to life, and we took so much away from the day due to the amount of information you shared with us and the practical way in which you shared it. A study of history through books alone does little justice to the lives of the soldiers who lie in and around those fields, however your respectful retelling of those days, weeks and months give a vivid and memorable account of those lives, which is as it should be.

We thank you for the day we spent on your tour, we all thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it as a must for anyone who is visiting Paris for even a few days. We would urge tourists to consider your tour as an alternative to the palaces, monuments and galleries, as it offers a lasting tribute to our and other nations’ soldiers, and this small area of ground so far away from home holds a generation of Australians who did not return. We were honoured to see it with you.

We are back home reflecting on the wonderful day spent with you on the Battlefield Tour you organised for us.  We appreciate how much research you did into our family history and thank you for forwarding that information on to us.  Your knowledge of the Battlefields is exceptional and the compassionate and unbiased way in which you portrayed this was very much appreciated. We would highly recommend your Tours to anyone wishing to have a truly wonderful and emotional experience. We finished the day feeling we had spent it with a friend, not a Tour Guide.

We are so glad we booked this personal tour with Olivier. From the time of first enquiry, responses were prompt and helpful and enabled us together to plan a timetable of events which took into account our express wish to visit my uncle’s grave and a number of other major sites. Olivier is very personable and we were totally at ease in his company. Nothing was too much trouble and the whole day was skilfully organised. his knowledge and enthusiasm for the Great War was infectious and enabled us to deepen our understanding of events. We covered a good deal of ground but we were never rushed. His descriptions and insights were sympathetically expressed and it made for a very moving and memorable day. We are delighted to have found such an excellent guide who made our visit very special.

My husband and 2 sons age 13 and 10 spent a day doing the Australian tour of the WW1 battlefields. They had a thoroughly enjoyable day and Olivier the guide had a terrific knowledge of the various battlefields and a real passion for the history. Olivier tailored the trip to focus on the area of interest. Would highly recommend Olivier’s tour.

Peter and Donna, Australia, September 2011

I highly recommend Olivier. this is a big emotional day out. We took 3 teenagers, and although they switched on and off, we’re sure they did appreciate some of the information, and certainly the memorials, cemeteries and landscape. Olivier was knowledgeable and interesting. He was able to find family members with very little warning, having good access to databases. His company is well worth using.

Craig, Louise and Family, Australia, September 2011

Hi Olivier, We are back in Australia and have had time to go through our thousands of holiday photos. We wanted to thank you again for our tour and helping us visit the war graves of lost relatives. The photos look really good and will provide us and our families with many memories. Thank you.

Mark & Debbie, Australia, June 2011

We did a day tour of the Somme battlefields with Olivier in May 2011. He met us at our hotel and we immediately felt we were in good hands. Our particular interest was the Australian involvement. A relative had been in the Australian 2nd division so we had a particular interest in that aspect. Olivier had done research for us (and we had had email discussions in advance) and tailored the tour accordingly. He provided a detailed historic background to the various sites, major and minor, that he took us too. He was extremely knowledgeable and obviously loved his work. Both his Francophone and his Anglophone customers were very satisfied with the tour. Along with kindly offering thorough advice on accomodation to suit our budget and needs, he was also able to provide baby seats for the 2 smallest tourists. Olivier dropped us at St. Quentin station with all our gear in good time for our evening train. One of our very best days in France.

Aurélie, Evan, Thomas and Paul -Sydney, Australia, May 2011

Bonjour Oliver, We had a fabulous time with you in France and we really appreciated you taking us around the battlefields. That was a great experience for us. Your explanations of the the battles was truly exceptional and your knowledge is remarkable in its detail. Both Regina and I really do appreciate all your efforts in picking us up, taking us on the tour and dropping us off at the rail station. Bye for now.

Eric and Regina, Australia, August 2011

Dear Olivier, Thank you so much for the lovely day driving in the valley of the Somme. We came wanting to trace our grandfathers memorial and pay our respects but you gave us so much more. It was a day we will always remember and treasure and try to share with our families. We were so impressed at the respect for the soldiers who had battled on the front and you knowledgeable and unbiased descriptions.

We were so surprised at the great concentration of the war in one small area where soldiers came from France, Australia, Britain, South Africa and Newfoundland to battle. So many to die and we still wonder why. We were saddened by the great losses of the French in the scotched earth policy and the black and grey crosses for German soldiers. We could not imagine that we could have had a better guide and teacher. Thank you.

Janice, Margaret and Norman, Australia, June 2011

Dear olivier, Just a few lines to thank you for your passion and knowledge during our battlefield tour of Northern France, it remains a special memory now that we are home. The actual fields of battle and the number of lives lost are hard to comprehend unless you visit them.

Corrie, Gary and Nola, Australia, June 2011

Bonjour Olivier, On behalf of John and I we want to thank you for an outstanding tour of the Somme with you. It was a day we will never forget. Your professionalism, incredible knowledge and friendly manner made the trip for us a huge success. We would also like to thank you for going the extra miles for us, and helping us to locate where my Great Great Uncle would have spent his last few days before passing away on the Somme as well as being able to visit his grave at Heilly.

Olivier, Thank for the tour. Exactly what we wanted. Really interesting and helped by the pieces fall into place. Names on banner on Anzac Day and memorials have a greater meaning. Thanks again.

Olivier, Thanks again and much appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our day with you, and wish you all the very best

Robert, Australia, June 2011

I have just spent 2 days touring the battlefields with Olivier. What a fantastic experience. I was picked up from my hotel in Lille and driven to see numerous battlefields including the ones in Belgium and France. Olivier is a very kind and considerate man who knows his subject well and has a tremendous enthusiasm and passion for the 1914-18 conflict, as well as an extensive knowledge of the facts etc. He is totally committed to providing the information the tourist wants and goes out of his way to oblige. I found Olivier to have a very good sense of humour and very pleasant company to be with. I am delighted to have found him and do not hesitate in recommending him to you. I know you will not be disappointed.

Mary-Ann, Australia, March 2011

Olivier, just wanted to say thanks for the battlefields tour on the 25th we found it extremely informative. We appreciated that you were able to adapt the tour to locate graves of family members and allowed us the time we needed. Thanks also for your prompt replies to my EMails which gave me confidence in your service considering l had to organize things from the other side of the world. Thanks once again.

Frank & Wendy, Australia, March 2011

In June 2010 I organised a full day battlefield tour with Olivier of Chemins d’Histoire. What a great day we had! I came across Olivier following an internet search, and from my first contact I had a good feeling about him. He is a consumate battlefield guide. I had some specific sites that I wanted to visit in the Somme. Olivier tailored a tour to suit my requirements, and added in some other great point of interest. We followed in the footsteps of the AIF 4th Division, particulary around Pozieres, Geudeucourt and Bullecourt. Olivier had obviously done is research before the tour and was knowledgeable and passionate about is work. My wife and two daughters, aged 11 and 6 came on the tour. At first I thought it may have been too much form them, but Olivier was terrific with the girls, and showed much patience and understanding during the long day. Digger Bear was a huge hit, and as starred in many of our photos taken across the Somme.
Anyone considering a battlefield tour could not go past Olivier, and I would highly recommend him for his enthousiam, passion, patience and his growing vocabulary of Australian slang spoken with a ripper accent!

Scott, Tweed Coast, Australia, June 2010

« I contacted Olivier because I wanted to do a tour of the Somme Battlefields to see where the Australians fought during the Great War.
In particular I wanted to visit Le Hamel to see the place where my Great Uncle Henry Dalziel VC fought.
Olivier not only took me to all of the major Australian Battlefields but he also took me to the trenches outside of Le Hamel where my Great Uncle performed the actions which led to him to being awarded the Victoria Cross.
I found Olivier to be extremely knowledgable and he tailored the tour to be exactly what I wanted.
I will never forget my tour and I would highly recommend him as a tour guide to anyone who wants to undertake a Somme Battlefield tour. »

Kent Dalziel, Australia, May 2010

« Our wonderful guide, Olivier, was recommanded to us by our daughter who took a tour of the battlefields with him last year. She maintained it was a life changing experience, something she would never forget, and having recently taken a tour with Olivier ourselves, I would thoroughly agree. He is a charming, very knowledgeable guide, who goes out of his way to personalise your tour and make it unforgetable. He took us to the well known sites but also to those not so well known but of enormous interest, explaining the strategies employed by both sides with understanding and maps and photographs to expand the whole experience. In our case he researched my relative’s military history and took us to the exact field where he fought and was wounded. He also travelled to Ypres to pick us up and planned his tour to fit with our travel arrangements. I could no more highly recommend him. »

Rosemary, Australia, April 2010

Dear Olivier, just a note to thank you once again for an excellent tour on 1st July. We all both enjoyed and learnt a great deal during our day with you and appreciate your additional efforts on our behalf. Personnally, I found it very interesting to hear your own French perspective on events. Best wishes.

Simon, United Kingdom, July 2010

Olivier, a quicke note from Kerrie and myself to thank you so much for a job so very well done today. I know Kerrie was very excited with the research you did on her great grandfather and in particular her great uncle. Visiting the sites and sensing the presence of the spirits of so many young men taken from this earth so far from their homes and family was memorable. Do enjoy good things. Kindest regards.

Roger and Kerrie, Australia, June 2010

We were picked up at our hotel in Amiens by our guide Olivier. He is a truly amazing and extremely interesting and knowledgeable person. He tailored our tour to follow the footsteps of Scottish soldiers and researched the history of my husband’s great grandfathers batallion. We were taken to all the major places of interest including the field in which is great grandfather was most probably killed and the tour ended with a very memorable and emotional trip to his graveside. We cannot thank Olivier enough for taking the time and effort to make this trip very memorable and personal to us. I would definately recommend his company.

Jennie, Scotland, July 2010

Dear Olivier, We arrived home last night and we wanted to send you a little note on how much we enjoyed the tour. Your knowledge of the local history of the Great War was remarkable. You helped us to put the battles and locations in perspective and lead us to understand the suffering and sacrifice of all those involved. The tour and visit to Vimy Ridge Memorial were highlights of our vacation in Europe. Thank you again.
