DEVONSHIRE CEMETERY

On July 1 1916 the 8th and 9th regiments of the Devonshire battalion (7th Division) attacked the German front near Mametz. Hundreds of soldiers were mowed down by a German machine gun that had not been destroyed by the artillery barrage.

Four days after the attack the Devonshire men buried their comrades in the trench they had occupied before the offensive. They nailed a sign saying  "The Devonshire held this trench - The Devonshire hold it still".

The cemetery has 163 graves of which 161 are of men from the Devonshire regiment.
