BATTLE OF FROMELLES
Fromelles was the first battle
fought by Australian on the Western Front. 62nd British Division and
5th Australian Division attacked on the 19th of July 1916, few days
before the beginning of the Battle of Pozieres. This attack was a
diversion attack. The 5th Australian Division suffered 5.533 casualties
and the 61st British Division suffered 1.547. The attack was a complete
failure, the Germans suffered only little casualties compared to
Australians and British and it therefore had no impact whatsoever upon
the progress of the Battle of the Somme.
